Spawn enemies in the arena without placing them on top of the player
Enemies that pop up right next to the hero cause hits nobody could have avoided, and a spawner that keeps trying forever can freeze the game in a small room. This entry picks a fair spot and has a sure answer when no random spot is good enough.
Why this works
Fairness means the player gets a chance to react. Rather than hoping chance lands somewhere kind, you set the minimum warning you owe the player, try a few spots against it, and keep an answer ready that is always acceptable when luck fails.
When not to use it
Skip it when surprise is the point, as in a horror game where something may appear close, or when enemies come from fixed doors. There the spots are designed by hand, so give each door its own warning sound or light instead.
