Make the world run low on an item when players keep taking it
If canned food spawns at the same rate forever, nothing in the world ever feels scarce, however many are taken. Tying what can appear to what is still out there makes the world respond to its players. It needs a way back, or the server ends up with nothing at all.
Why this works
Shared resources feel real when taking them leaves a mark everybody can see. Tying the chance of finding something to how much is left makes players themselves push it toward rare, and a slow refill keeps the world from dying for good.
When not to use it
Skip it in a single-player game or a small group that plays in turns, where nobody else feels the shortage. There, a simple daily limit or a fixed amount per area is easier to understand and does the job.
