Let supplies grow thinner each day without rounding them to nothing

A world where the old stores slowly run dry makes players move on and take risks. But shrinking a stack of three by a few percent and rounding it gives the same three, then suddenly nothing. There is a way to shrink amounts smoothly that the player does not see coming.

Why this works

Whole items cannot be split, but an average can be exact. Letting the dice decide the rounding means a half is given half of the time, so scarcity grows smoothly day by day instead of dropping in steps that everyone can see coming.

When not to use it

Skip it in a story game where the same chest must hold the same things for every player, or where your testing needs identical results each time. Use fixed amounts per day, written down, and let the story set the pace.
