Let wind sweep across a field of trees as moving gusts, not all swaying as one
Trees that all swing on the same sine wave look like a metronome. Random sway per tree looks like confusion. Real wind arrives as gusts that travel across the land. Here is how to make a wave of wind roll through, with some variety per tree and no visible repeating.
Why this works
Real wind is a moving thing: what reaches one tree reaches its neighbour a moment later. Giving every tree the same wind but delayed by its distance makes a visible wave cross the field, while a personal stiffness keeps the trees from moving like soldiers.
When not to use it
Wrong for a still scene, a storm that whips everything at once, or a game with so few trees that each can have its own hand-made sway. It is also pointless where the wind direction is changing so fast that no wave could be seen.
