Let vines grow along a wall as the dread rises, and never shrink back

Plants taking over a house is a slow horror that rewards the player's attention, but if the vines are tied straight to a meter they twitch when the meter wobbles and pull back when the scene calms down. Growth that you can see should only go one way. Here is how to tie it to the story and keep it moving at a believable pace.

Why this works

Dread builds up and fades, but a place that has been overgrown stays overgrown. Letting the vine only ever grow, and only at a set pace, turns a passing mood into lasting damage the player can see and remember.

When not to use it

Skip it when the player can fight the growth back, like burning or cutting vines, or when the level resets often. Then the length must be able to fall, or the vines become a story the player can't change.
