Make bubbles rise and pop in a swamp, with a heavy belch now and then
Steady bubbles are pleasant. A swamp that is hiding something should breathe unevenly: long quiet stretches, a few lone bubbles, then a burst. The bubbles themselves should grow as they rise. Here is how to build it without keeping a list, so that skipping time or loading a save shows the same swamp.
Why this works
Bubbles come at random but not evenly: now and then gas collects and bursts out at once. Deciding birth by the time slot alone lets you list every bubble alive at any moment, with nothing to store.
When not to use it
Don't use it for water the player interacts with, like a bubble that marks a hidden item or a hazard. Real signals need to be placed and kept, not drawn from luck by the clock.
