Let stars come out one by one as dusk deepens, bright ones first

A night sky that switches on all at once looks like a texture swap. Real stars come out in order, the brightest first, and they stay out once seen. Here is how to tie the sky to the light level so every star has its own moment, none flicker in and out, and the horizon stays dim.

Why this works

Your eye sees a star only when it stands out against the sky, so the brightest show first and the faintest last as the sky darkens. Giving each star a fixed point at which it appears keeps stars from flickering in and out.

When not to use it

Skip it in a game where the sky is a map or a puzzle, such as stars the player must find in a set place and order. Fix their positions and show them all from the start there.
