Spot sudden building losses that the player did not cause, not their own cleanup

A big drop in the number of buildings could be a fire, a flood or a player tearing down a block to rebuild. Only the first can make someone leave. This entry shows how to separate losses the game did to the player from changes the player chose.

Why this works

A drop in what the player owns means two different things: something they chose to remove, or something that happened to them. Only the second can feel unfair. Subtracting what they did on purpose, and adding what they rebuilt, leaves just the harm they did not ask for.

When not to use it

Do not use it if the game has no sudden losses, or if the player can lose things in ways you do not record, like trading or merging. The numbers would then blame the wrong thing. Record every way something can disappear first.
