Check that stated travel times between places make sense together

Chapter one says the mountain pass takes five days and chapter six says the detour through the valley takes two, so nobody would ever use the pass. Here is a check on the whole map of distances that finds shortcuts that make a stated route silly.

Why this works

Once places are joined by stated journeys, the map has to behave like a real one: no road can be slower than a way round that uses other roads. Comparing each stated trip with the best alternative finds the slips nobody spots reading chapter by chapter.

When not to use it

Skip it when travel is magic, a dream or a loading screen, or when roads are slow for reasons the story tells. Mark those routes as slow, or leave the check out and let the plot explain the odd times.
