Make ice crack and groan under weight and break only when the load is really too high

Crossing a frozen lake is a tense scene when the ice talks to you. It falls apart when the ice breaks at a random moment, or never does however thick the warning cracks get. Here is the simple rule for how much ice can carry, and how to turn the margin into creaks, cracks and a fair last chance.

Why this works

Ice is much stronger when thicker, far more than twice as strong when twice as thick. Showing creaks and cracks as the load nears its limit, and breaking only after a fair warning, lets a careful player judge the risk and learn.

When not to use it

Skip it when the ice is a one-time scripted collapse, or when the surface is hidden from the player. A trap with no warning or pattern can't be learned, so give a clear sign or a fixed trigger.
