Float a lantern or a body down a river that is fastest in the middle and snags on the bank

A boat of paper or something worse carried down a river is a classic story beat, and an object that moves at one speed across the whole width looks like a conveyor belt. A real river is quick in the middle, slow at the banks and pulls things sideways on bends. Here is how to get a drift that can end in the reeds.

Why this works

Water runs fastest in the middle and slows at the banks where it rubs. Anything afloat therefore travels quickly in mid-stream and gets held up near the edge, which is exactly how a lost lantern ends up caught in the reeds.

When not to use it

Skip it when the object must reach a place at a certain time, such as a message the story needs downstream. Move it along a fixed path there, as chance and snagging could strand it for good.
