Make a bog or quicksand pull down harder the more the player struggles
A bog that kills you in a fixed time is just a timer, and one that does not react to your input is unfair. The fear in such a scene comes from the rule that moving fast is what sinks you. Here is the rule, how to keep it readable, and what makes holding still a real way out and not a loophole.
Why this works
The trap teaches its own escape: panicking sinks you faster and staying calm lets you rise. Because the mud grips only the walking speed, not the sinking, the player feels the danger before reading any number.
When not to use it
Don't use it where the player can't hold still or can't tell how hard they push, such as on a touch screen with jumpy controls. Offer a visible meter or a button there that frees them.
