Clicking the minimap jumps to the wrong place when the map is not the same shape

A small overview map that is wider or taller than the picture it shows has empty bands, and clicks or the little view frame go wrong near them. Here is how to place the map inside its box, turn a click into a spot on the real map, and draw the frame so it never leaves the map.

Why this works

The small map and the real map seldom share a shape, so a click must first be corrected for the empty bars around the picture. Clamping rather than ignoring clicks that land in the bars lets a drag along the edge still steer the view.

When not to use it

Do not add a minimap when the map is small enough to see at once, or when its detail is what matters. It then takes screen room and shows nothing new. A zoom-out key or a full-screen map button often serves better.
