Arrow-key scrolling starts and stops abruptly, and left plus right misbehaves
A camera that jumps to full speed and stops dead feels cheap, while one that coasts feels sluggish. Pressing two opposite keys together and turning around are where most versions go wrong. Here is a ramp with different rates for speeding up and braking, and what to do on reversal.
Why this works
A moving thing should speed up gently and brake firmly, because the player wants to arrive exactly and to feel in control. Setting the wanted speed from the keys and letting the real speed catch up at a limited pace gives both, and two opposite keys simply cancel.
When not to use it
Do not ramp in games that need instant response, such as a platformer or a shooter, where the delay feels like lag. And in a very small view a long glide overshoots. Use direct speed there, with a very short ease at most.
