Show the whole selected army, not hidden behind the menu or zoomed into one soldier
A key that frames the selected units sounds simple, yet it zooms absurdly close on a single unit, cuts off units at the edges, and hides them under the bottom panel. Here is how to size the view, with room around the group, and where the center must go when panels cover part of the screen.
Why this works
The picture the player can really use is the part not covered by menus. So the group is fitted into that free area, with some breathing room, and the zoom is held back so a single soldier is not blown up to the size of the screen.
When not to use it
Do not fit the view automatically when the player just wants to keep their place, since the sudden jump loses their sense of where they are. Do it on a key press only, and offer a way back to the previous view.
