Units flip between icon and full detail back and forth while I hold one zoom
Zoomed out, a thousand units should be small symbols; zoomed in they should show full detail. Where the switch happens, the picture flickers back and forth at the slightest shake of the wheel. Here is the rule that makes each switch happen once and what happens when the zoom jumps over several levels.
Why this works
A switch that happens at exactly one line will flip back and forth whenever the zoom hovers near it. Making it need a little more to turn on than to turn off leaves a calm gap in between, where the picture simply stays as it was.
When not to use it
Do not add the gap when the change is smooth anyway, such as a fade between two pictures, or when the two looks are so alike that nobody notices. Blending them over a short stretch is simpler than remembering which one was last.
