Stop the player from losing the one item the story still needs
Players sell, drop, burn and trade almost everything, and one day the thing a late scene depends on is gone for good. Here is how to list every way an important item can leave the player, and which of them truly leave no way back.
Why this works
Blocking the sell button covers one exit, but a sandbox offers many: drop, burn, trade, theft. What matters is whether a way back stays open until the item is needed, so ask about the road back, not about each exit.
When not to use it
Skip it when losing the item is the story, such as a heirloom the hero must give up, or when the world is so generous that the item can always be found again. Then a careful watch for traps is wasted effort.
