Spielerando

How many monsters will the area really hold once spawning and despawning settle?

Designers set a spawn rate and a despawn rate and guess the crowd size, but the area cap and the way monsters leave change the answer, and the result is often either an empty field or a packed one. This shows how to predict the crowd before you ship it.

Why this works

A crowd settles where arrivals balance departures, and departures grow with the crowd while arrivals stop at the cap. So the steady size comes from that balance, not from dividing the two rates, and you can compute it before anyone plays.

When not to use it

Skip it when the crowd is scripted, like waves, bosses or story encounters, or when players can kill faster than anything spawns. Then the balance never settles, so design the timeline by hand and test it by playing.
