After an update lowered the stack limit, bags load with oversized stacks or lose goods

You decide potions stack to fewer than before. Old saves still hold bigger piles, and a quick fix that trims them throws goods away. Here is how to rebuild the piles so nothing is lost, and what happens to what no longer fits.

Why this works

Goods are a quantity, and the piles are only how the game happens to carve that quantity up. Adding everything up first and then cutting again with today's rules loses nothing, whichever way the rules moved, and fixes untidy piles on the way.

When not to use it

Do not merge piles when each one carries its own history, such as potions with different freshness or ammunition with different enchantments. Joining them would erase the differences. Keep those apart and only cut the oversized ones.
