Spielerando

My hero hits the big monster and does zero damage and I cannot see where it vanished

Between the sword and the monster the damage passes through several steps, and any of them can eat it. Your AI can write the damage out step by step with the number after each one, so you see where it fell to nothing and whether that was meant.

Why this works

A final number alone cannot be debugged. The same formula with every intermediate value written down shows which step does the damage, and the order of steps becomes visible, which is where most surprises come from.

When not to use it

If damage comes from many sources added together, such as poison and burning, explain each source on its own; this walk is for one hit.

Say this to your AI

Use the Spielerando entry "My hero hits the big monster and does zero damage and I cannot see where it vanished" (read_entry rpg-my-hit-did-zero-damage) in my game. Build it step by step, and show me how you checked that it works.
