Walk, run and stand from a stick that flickers between the thresholds

Analog sticks let a hero tiptoe, walk or run, and the animation has to pick one. With a single threshold per gait, a thumb resting near the line makes the legs switch every few frames. Here is how to use two thresholds per change so the gait holds, and how speed still follows the stick inside each gait.

Why this works

A thumb is never perfectly steady, so a single line between two states makes the game flip back and forth over nothing. Needing more to go up than to go back gives a gap that absorbs the wobble, so each change is a decision.

When not to use it

Skip it with a keyboard or buttons, where there is no in-between value, and in games where speed should follow the stick exactly, like a racing or flight game. There, use the stick value directly and give up the named gaits.
