Climbing a ladder with hands that match the rungs and a clean way off at the top

Ladders in adventure games go wrong in small ways: the hero slides past rungs without grabbing them, flies off the top, falls off the bottom by accident, or coasts after the stick is released. Here is how to treat the climb as a position along the ladder, with events for rungs and both ends.

Why this works

Climbing is a one-line path, so one value, the place along it, is all that is needed. Tying hands, sound and the exit to that single value keeps them in step, and stopping the moment the player lets go makes the hero feel held, not floating.

When not to use it

Skip it when climbing is meant to be a real hazard, such as slippery vines where the hero can lose grip, or when the surface is wide and free, like a rock face. Then the path is no longer a single line and needs free movement in two directions.
