Footsteps and leg animation slide when the hero walks slowly or at different speeds

If steps are driven by a clock, a slow walk looks like skating and a sprint sounds like one long rattle. The feet should land when the body has really travelled far enough, even when a lag spike swallows several in one frame. Here is what to count and where to start.

Why this works

A foot lands when the body has covered a stride, whatever the clock says. Tying pictures and sounds to the same count of ground covered keeps them in step with each other and with the movement at any speed, even a slow shuffle.

When not to use it

Skip it for flying, swimming or gliding characters, and for hand-drawn walking loops that must look exactly as the artist drew them. There, play the loop on its own timing and let it be slightly off the ground.
