A character stands frozen because the saved conversation line no longer exists
You rewrite a dialogue after release, and players who saved in the middle of that talk load into a line that is gone. The game hangs or shows nothing. Here is what to save and how to find the closest place to pick up.
Why this works
A single position breaks the moment content changes, but a trail of where the talk has been gives you somewhere to fall back to. Stepping back along the trail finds the nearest place that still makes sense, and the player barely notices a jump.
When not to use it
Do not save a trail for short talks of one or two lines, or when you do not save mid-talk at all. Simply let the person start the conversation again. The extra trail only pays off in long, branching conversations.
