Jumping off a rope or vine without catching it again at once
The hero grabs a rope fine. Then the player jumps off sideways and, a frame later, is hanging on the same rope again, or flops straight down like a sack. Here is the leave-the-rope rule that gives a clean kick away and a real jump.
Why this works
Letting go of something that is still touching you needs a short pause in which the game does not offer it back. The pause must be long enough for the hero to actually get clear, or the jump looks like a failure to leave.
When not to use it
Skip it when the player is meant to swing from rope to rope, as in a chain of vines where quick re-grabbing is the game. There, catch automatically but only ahead of the hero, in the direction of travel, and never the one just left.
