Grabbing a ledge with the hands, even when falling fast

The character should catch a ledge it just barely reaches, yet never snap onto one it is rushing past, and never grab the same ledge again right after letting go. Most first versions miss fast falls or loop forever. Here is a catch zone that behaves.

Why this works

The player grabs when the hands pass the edge, not when the game happens to look. A fast body can cross the whole catch area between two looks, so the test must cover everything the hands passed through, and the grab needs a pause to let go cleanly.

When not to use it

Skip it in games where grabbing should be earned, such as survival or horror, where hanging on is a hard skill with an effort bar. Then make the catch narrow, tie it to a button press and let the player slip, so the edge stays dangerous.
