Spielerando

A bounce pad that always sends you to the same height

Land on a pad at a walk and you go up a little, drop onto it from a tower and you shoot off the screen. Designers want one height they can build a level around. Here is why adding to the speed fails, and how to make the launch land on target.

Why this works

A designer builds levels from heights, so the pad must promise a height and keep it, whatever came in before. And the game moves in small steps, so the promise only holds if it is worked out with the same steps the game really uses.

When not to use it

Skip it when the pad should reward how the player arrives, such as a pad that sends you higher the harder you land, or one you can steer. Then add the incoming speed on purpose, cap the result, and let the player see the effect in the level.
