Is the Tuesday daily puzzle really harder, or are different people playing?

Comparing solve times by weekday mixes up hard puzzles with changing crowds, because the players who show up on a weekend are not the ones who show up on a Monday. This entry shows how to measure each puzzle against the person who solved it.

Why this works

Each day brings a different crowd, so raw times describe who showed up, not how hard the puzzle was. Measuring every solve against that same person's usual pace removes the crowd from the comparison and leaves only the puzzle.

When not to use it

It fails when most players show up only once or twice, because there is then no usual pace to measure against. In that case compare puzzles of the same kind within one day, or ask a small test group to play the whole week.
