How many levels does it take before players have really learned a new puzzle mechanic?

A mechanic that is introduced and then used right away must be learned somewhere, and the data shows where. This entry shows how to follow the same group of players through their first uses and avoid the illusion that the curve flattens by itself.

Why this works

If you average whoever is still playing at each step, slow learners drop out and the curve improves by itself. Following one fixed group from first use onward means any speed-up belongs to those same people actually learning.

When not to use it

It says little when only a small slice of players ever reaches the later uses, since the fixed group is then not typical. Then ask why people left earlier, or test the introduction with new players watched one by one.
