Move a lift or door with a gentle start and stop at a top speed
Moving things at constant speed looks stiff, and a plain ease makes long trips either painfully slow or shockingly fast. Here is the motion real machines use, which also behaves for short trips where top speed is never reached.
Why this works
Heavy things don't start or stop at once, so the believable motion is a smooth push, a steady run and a smooth brake. Because the whole trip follows from the push, the speed limit and the distance, you can say where the thing is at any moment, even for a short hop.
When not to use it
Don't use it for things that are meant to feel light or snappy, like a UI button, or for a platform that must be somewhere at an exact time with no wait. Use a move with a fixed duration. Also not for uneven rides with stops.
