Make a popup overshoot by exactly as much as you want

Overshooting entrances give buttons and rewards a lively pop, but the usual magic number gives a surprise: tiny movements barely show it, large ones swing wildly. Here is how to choose the overshoot you want as a percentage and get exactly that.

Why this works

A little overshoot makes a popup feel springy, but the same push looks huge on a big move and invisible on a small one. If you decide how far it should go past the goal and work backward to the curve, the feel stays the same wherever you use it.

When not to use it

Don't use it for serious or precise things like a warning, a bank screen or a slider that someone is trying to hit exactly. The wobble reads as playful. Also not where the thing cannot go past its goal, such as a full bar. Use a plain smooth stop.
