Keep things moving on the beat when the music and the picture drift apart
A pulsing light or a rhythm lane that follows the game timer slowly slides away from the song, and reading the song position directly looks choppy because it updates in jumps. Here is how to get a steady beat clock and judge button presses against it fairly.
Why this works
The sound card reports its place in rough jumps and plays later than it says, while the eye wants a smooth beat. A clock of your own keeps the motion smooth, and nudging it a little toward each report keeps it honest without visible jerks.
When not to use it
Don't use it when there is no music to follow, or when the beat is only a loose mood, such as ambient pulses that don't need to match. The game's own clock is enough there. Also not for tracks with changing tempo without extra work.
