Spielerando

Generate the same world for every player from one shared number

Sharing a single number instead of the whole world saves a lot of traffic, but it only works if every machine draws the same random values in the same order. One extra random call on one side, such as for a particle, shifts everything after it. Here is the way to split the randomness so that cannot happen.

Why this works

Chance can be repeated if it is a fixed list of numbers drawn in a fixed order. Giving each purpose its own list, started from the shared number, means one side's extra or skipped draw cannot shift anything that belongs to another.

When not to use it

Skip it when the world is large, handmade or changes by player action: send it, or send only the changes, because a number cannot rebuild what the number did not create. Also skip it if the world must be secret from some players.
