A player who joins mid-game appears right on top of someone
Picking a start spot at random puts the newcomer inside a friend or next to an enemy about as often as you would fear. Choosing the spot that is farthest from everything else is better, but two people joining in the same moment still collide. Here is the choice, the tie rule, and a protective pause scaled to how crowded it is.
Why this works
A newcomer knows nothing about the scene, so the first moment decides their mood. The place with the most room around it gives them time to look, and a safe window that grows when space is tight covers the cases where room is missing.
When not to use it
It is wrong when the spot has meaning, for example a team base, a checkpoint or a story start where everyone should meet. Then use that fixed place, or the one next to a friend the person chose.
