A friend's connection drops and their character stands in the way
When someone loses connection in a co-op game, their character either vanishes at once, which is harsh if they come back in a second, or stays solid and blocks everyone. A staged fade-out handles both. Here is how long each stage lasts, what the others can do meanwhile, and how the returning player is treated.
Why this works
Most lost connections are a blink, but a few are real exits, and you cannot tell which at first. Stages let you be gentle with the blink and still free the room for the real exit, without punishing anyone for bad luck.
When not to use it
Do not keep a ghost in a fast competitive game where a missing player gives the others an unfair edge or a blocked goal. There, hand the character to the computer at once or end the round.
