When stress overflows, the character breaks down and is a little weaker for good
A stress bar that just resets at the top teaches the player to ignore it. Here is how a breakdown can cost something lasting, why one huge hit must break the character only once, and where the damage stops so the game stays playable.
Why this works
A warning that costs nothing gets ignored. When a breakdown leaves a lasting mark, the player treats stress as a resource to protect. Handling an overflow as one single event, however large the blow, keeps the price fair and the character playable.
When not to use it
Do not use it in a game for younger players or one meant to be forgiving, where lasting damage feels cruel. There, let a breakdown cost time or a scene, and then let the character return fully rested.
