Affection split between rivals: one rises, the others fall, and the total stays 100
In a story where a character can only love one person fully, giving to one should take from the others fairly. Rounding quickly breaks it, and the shares add up to 99 or 101. Here is how to shift shares with whole numbers that always sum to 100.
Why this works
Affection here is one fixed pie: if one slice grows, the others must shrink by the same total. Taking from each rival in proportion to what they hold feels natural, and sharing out the rounding leftovers fairly keeps the whole always complete.
When not to use it
Skip it when a character can care for several people at once, as in a story of friendships where gaining one bond costs nothing elsewhere. Give each bond its own separate meter that rises and falls freely.
