Hallucinations that switch on and off at the edge of a sanity level, again and again
When sanity hovers around a threshold, whispers and visions flicker in and out with every tiny change, which looks broken and wears out the effect. Here is how to give each stage a different way in and way out, and what happens on a big jump.
Why this works
A threshold that is crossed in both directions at the same point flickers whenever the value hovers there. Giving every stage a separate way in and way out, and remembering which stage is active, turns a jittery signal into a calm, readable change.
When not to use it
Skip it when the effect should react instantly and honestly to every change, such as a gauge the player is meant to steer by. A delayed exit would mislead them; show the raw value and let it move freely.
