Melee attacks that turn toward the enemy you meant, not one behind you

Swings that go into empty air because the enemy was a little to the side feel unfair, but a magnetic aim that snaps to any nearby enemy feels out of control. Here is how to choose the target, how wide a cone to allow, and how to stop the aim from jumping between enemies.

Why this works

Players aim with a thumb or a mouse, which is rough, and they mean the enemy in front of them. Weighing both closeness and direction, and sticking to the first choice unless a new one is clearly better, picks what they meant without jumping around.

When not to use it

Do not use it in games about precise aim, such as a duel, a stealth takedown or a puzzle where hitting the wrong thing matters. Turn the character exactly as the player points, and let them choose the target with a lock-on button.
