Spielerando

Find the exact moment two players' copies of a multiplayer battle stopped agreeing

In a game where every player runs the same simulation from the same orders, one tiny difference grows until the two screens show different battles. Here is a fingerprint of the game state, taken every tick, and a way to say at which tick the two sides first disagreed.

Why this works

If every player runs the same game from the same orders, the only thing worth sending is a fingerprint of the world each tick. The first tick where fingerprints differ is where the fault began, and refusing anything uncertain in shared data stops it entering unnoticed.

When not to use it

Wrong for games where one server holds the true world and sends it to the players; there nothing can drift apart, so no fingerprints are needed. It also cannot find the cause, only the moment. And a fingerprint is no protection against cheating.
