Work out lockpicking odds when picks can break

Skill against lock difficulty sounds simple until picks snap. Players want to know whether ten picks are enough, and designers want locks that matter without becoming a wall or a free pass. This entry gives the real chance of opening a lock with a given supply.

Why this works

A chance that depends on a supply is easier to judge as a whole than step by step. Working out how likely one pick is to open the lock before it breaks lets you tell players honestly whether their stock is enough and tune locks around it.

When not to use it

Don't use odds for locks that are part of a puzzle or a story moment, where the player should feel clever rather than lucky. Use a mini-game or a hidden key there, so skill and thinking decide, not a roll of the dice.
