Spielerando

Let players lock the bonuses they like and reroll the rest

Rerolling gear until it is perfect is a favourite way to spend gold, but if keeping a good bonus is free, the whole system collapses into one click. This entry prices the locks, forces a real change, and handles the case where nothing can change at all.

Why this works

A choice only matters if it costs something. Pricing each kept bonus higher than the last turns rerolling from a click into a decision, and refusing a reroll that cannot change anything protects the player from paying for nothing.

When not to use it

Don't make rerolling costly in a relaxed game where tinkering is the fun, or where gold is scarce and gear is meant to be found, not forged. There, make rerolls cheap or free and let players experiment without fear of waste.
