Let list items appear one after another without taking forever
A staggered entrance looks great with five items and ridiculous with fifty, because the last one arrives seconds late. Here is how to keep the cascade feel while keeping the whole thing inside a time you choose, and how to play it backwards when closing.
Why this works
A little delay between items shows the order and draws the eye down the list, but the wait must not grow with the list. Fixing the total time and squeezing the gaps keeps the rhythm for short lists and the patience of the player for long ones.
When not to use it
Don't use it for a list the player uses at once or opens many times, such as an inventory in a fast game: even a short wait gets annoying. Show it fully drawn, or only stagger the very first opening.
