Close a half-open menu smoothly instead of snapping or restarting
Tap a button while a panel is still sliding open and it often jumps to fully open before closing, or takes the full time to close from a tiny gap. Here is a way to reverse at any moment so the motion stays continuous and takes only as long as needed.
Why this works
A panel has one position between shut and open, so give it one number for that and only change which way the number heads. Reversing then retraces the very same path from the very same spot, and a panel that is a quarter open needs only a quarter of the time to shut.
When not to use it
Don't use it when opening and closing should look different, such as a door that creaks open slowly but slams shut, or when closing must wait until something finishes. Give the two directions their own motion and rules.
