A roll just before landing should soften a long fall, if it is well timed

Survival games reward players who press the roll key just before they hit the ground. Make the window too wide and it is automatic, too narrow and nobody ever sees it. Here is how to judge the press, what it saves, what happens above a certain height and what the character keeps of its speed.

Why this works

A skill move needs a window the player can learn by feel. Counting only the latest press just before the ground rewards a decision, ignores early mashing without punishing it, and keeps some harm for very long falls so the move never becomes a free pass.

When not to use it

Leave it out in a game where falls are meant to be avoided, or for players who cannot time a press well. There, give a flat softening, such as a landing item or soft ground, that works without any timing.
