Every jump uses a little food, but the hunger bar shows whole points
Survival games tie effort to hunger, and a single jump costs far less than one point. Round each jump to nothing and jumping is free; round it up and ten hops starve the player. Here is how to collect the small costs so that the bar drops at the right rate, with no drift from decimals.
Why this works
Small costs must add up, not vanish or be rounded up. A hidden tally collects the tiny amounts and pays one visible point only when enough has gathered, using whole units so that nothing drifts and the bar drops at the rate you meant.
When not to use it
Leave it out when effort should not matter, such as in a relaxed exploring game or one for small children. Hunger tied to every jump then only nags, so give food costs only to bigger actions.
