Can a rolling hazard be jumped, or is it too slow to clear?

A barrel rolling slowly along the floor is harder to jump than a fast one, which surprises designers. The time spent in the air above it is short, and a wide, slow hazard can be impossible to clear. Here is the arithmetic for how fast it must come.

Why this works

Whether a hazard is fair is a question of time, not looks. The jump keeps the feet above the hazard for a certain stretch, and the hazard needs a certain stretch to pass; if the first is shorter than the second, no player can win.

When not to use it

Not useful for hazards that cannot be jumped on purpose, such as walls of fire that need a different answer like ducking. Check the right move for the obstacle first, and then the timing for that move.
