Spielerando

A platform that crumbles under your feet, once you have landed on it

A crumbling floor adds a clock to every jump. But it should not fall because you jumped through it from below, should not be saved by hopping off, and should not come back while you are standing in its place. Here are the states that make it fair.

Why this works

A trap works when the player can read it. If the warning always starts at the landing, cannot be undone and ends after a fixed time, the player learns the rhythm and can plan a route, and the floor never comes back under their feet.

When not to use it

Don't use it on the only path through a level that players must repeat often; being forced to rush each time gets tedious. There, use a platform that is solid, or one that falls only once and stays as a ramp.
