When a dragged jigsaw piece should click into place and when it should not
Snap too eagerly and pieces jump into wrong spots on small screens; too strictly and the right spot never catches on a thumb. This entry shows how big the catch zone should be, why it must depend on the piece, and how to treat pieces that are already placed.
Why this works
A snap is a promise that a piece belongs here. So it may only work for the piece's own spot, close enough to feel right on this screen and never so close to a neighbour that two spots could claim the same piece.
When not to use it
For a hard puzzle, where finding the right place is the whole challenge, snapping near a spot is a hint in itself. Reduce the reach, or snap only when the piece is nearly exact, so help does not do the work for the player.
