Spielerando

Is this player still learning the fight or really stuck?

Ten failed tries can mean steady progress or going in circles, and the game should react very differently to each. This entry shows how to tell them apart from the tries so far without being fooled by one lucky or unlucky run.

Why this works

Progress is shown by the best result, not the latest, because one run is noisy. Learning means the best of recent tries beats everything before; help should come only when it does not, since interrupting someone who improves feels patronising.

When not to use it

Do not use it when progress cannot be measured as a fraction, as in puzzles or open exploration. There, offer help on request, or watch for repeated identical mistakes instead.
